It is pretty much established that Michigan is the best state in the union to live. https://www.thrillist.com/travel/nation/ranking-the-united-states-of-america-from-best-to-worst. Any doubters should take a few days and drive up the coast of Lake Michigan from St. Joe to Mackinac. It is a breathtaking trip. Incredible beaches, wonderful resort towns, vineyards and fruit orchards, quaint fishing villages, art communities, bountiful farmland.
We spent the 4th of July at Falling Water Lodge in Leland - a magical experience. After watching the fireworks at Northport, we continued on through Traverse City and stopped at an exploding cherry farm in the Old Mission Peninsula, where the fruit was so heavy the tree branches had to be propped up.
And then on through Ellsworth - home of two of the finest restaurants in North America - to Charlevoix, Harbor Springs and Petosky - the Aspen of the Great Lakes. And finally Mackinac and The Captain's Quarters, another absolute jewel! As Americana goes, the Grand Hotel, Governors Mansion and Fort Mackinac simply cannot be topped.
